Project Gulf Impact

Dr. Vincent Wilson is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Louisiana State University, talks about the carcinogenic effects of the oil and chemical dispersants in the air that people are breathing all along the coast and inland.

Some of Dr. Wilson’s research interests include: toxicology of environmental pollutants and genotoxic agents; molecular genetic processes involved in carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, aging, and genetic diseases; environmental biomonitoring of genotoxic exposure to feral species; species-specific identification and microbial communities.

Project Gulf Impact’s mission is to document the economic, environmental and human health impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This project seeks to provide a voice for residents of the Gulf and hopes to capture the social, political and environmental climate surrounding one of the greatest environmental disasters of our time.

The LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans is assessing Louisiana residents’ current and long-term mental health needs caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The medical school’s department of psychiatry has a state grant to interview about 1,500 adults, some by phone and some in person, in St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Lafourche, and Terrebonne parishes.

LSU officials say phone interviews won’t take more than 15 minutes, with in-person interviews lasting at most 45 minutes. Everyone will receive referrals and information about available resources. Those given the longer assessments will also get educational literature.

Some of the interviews will be random. LSU plans additional interviews of people in fishing, oil and tourism.

LSU appears headed toward another blockbuster-type season opener next year as talks are ongoing with Oregon about a game in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

LSU senior associate athletic director for operations Verge Ausberry confirmed that the two schools are discussing opening the 2011 season with the intersectional matchup. LSU will open the 2010 season in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic against North Carolina in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.

"We still have some details to work out, some options on the table," said Ausberry, who handles scheduling. "But hopefully we can come out with an announcement shortly."

Oregon spokesman David Williford on the Portland Oregonian website said "no contracts have been signed - it's not a done deal yet. It's certainly in the works."

The game would give LSU another large dose of national exposure and a presence in Texas, which has been a fertile recruiting area for the Tigers. It would probably be broadcast by ESPN or one of its affiliates. ESPN is helping to broker the deal.

Oregon recently canceled its scheduled 2011 opener with Kansas State at the request of the opponent, opening the way for the LSU-Oregon matchup. It would be the first football meeting between the schools.
